Spelling
5th & 6th Grade
Spelling is pretty independent. Each week, students will be doing a spelling lesson out of a designated spelling book. Their tests will NOT be the words from the weekly lessons. The lessons are only used to reinforce spelling and phonetic rules and to expose the students to a variety of words.
Spelling tests and lists are individualized per student. At the beginning of the year, students will start out with the same word list. If a student correctly spells a word, they will highlight it on a master list and move on. If they do not spell the word correctly, they will retest the word until it is spelled correctly. The words are pulled from a variety of places. Some are words that are encountered in daily writing (name of school, city, state, days of the week, etc.) and some words come from a high frequency word list for grades 5 and 6. At the beginning, the words will seem quite easy, but don't worry, they get progressively harder! Students who have a strong mastery of spelling and who need to be challenged will likely have 20 words per week. Students who struggle might have less. That is the beauty of this style of spelling, it is individualized for each student! On Friday, I will give individualized spelling tests to each student. On Monday, each student will write their list for the week. Students will be responsible for updating their word lists online. If they have done their job, you can click on the link below to find the word list for the week. They will also have a hand written list to keep at home and one to keep at school.

7th & 8th Grade
Spelling is pretty independent. Each week, students get a new word list (can be found in their spelling book or by clicking on the link below). On Monday, a pretest is given for this word list. If they spell all of their words correctly, they will not have to take the test on Friday. If they do not spell all of their words correctly, they have to write all of the words they misspelled 5x each and turn this in by Friday. Also due Friday is a spelling lesson. This is found in the spelling book and can be tore out and turned in as the lesson is completed. Friday students will take a final spelling test.
There are 20 words on each spelling list. On the Friday test, there are an additional 5 words given that are considered extra credit. I encourage all students to try these words, as they do not count against them if they spell the word wrong. These words are listed as "Challenge Words" on the first page of the lesson.
Every six lessons is a spelling review. Students will have 50 words for these lessons. The words are repeats from the previous five lessons. There are no extra credit words in these lessons.
